Anemia usually takes time to set in, its symptoms do not appear straight away, that is why it is important to know what the symptoms are, this way you can get treatment straight away. Here are some of the main symptoms of anemia.

Headaches Although headaches are very common in a variety of alignments they are a big part of anemia. If you have frequent headaches it is always best to get it checked out even if the cause is not anemia.

Shortness Of Breath When there isn’t enough oxygen in your blood you start to get short of breath, simple tasks might wear you out and exercise is not possible anymore.

Pale skin Blood gives the skin a flushed tone to it, when there aren’t enough red blood cells the skin starts turn pale, the skin may also be dry and flaky.

Weakness When your body is not getting enough oxygen it starts to become weak, the muscles have to fight a lot harder to work.

Fatigue You may feel tired and worn out at the slightest bit of exercise, even everyday tasks seem impossible to complete.

Cold Hands and Feet Your body will only send blood where it really needs to, it starts to neglect the limbs to keep the vital organs functioning properly.

Restless Legs Syndrome RLS is common among anemia sufferers, it is when you legs hurt during sleeping hours. You may get an unpleasant feeling in them which stops when you move your legs, this can cause difficulty sleeping and waking in the night.

Pica You may start to crave non foods such as dust, coal or dirt.

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding Heavy bleeding during menstruation is something to worry about if you are prone to getting anemic. It can cause loss of a lot of red blood cells which are essential to the body.

Poor Diet Lack of iron in the diet is a huge factor in why people become anemic, analyze your diet and see where you can add more iron into it. Try to track what you eat and how you can improve.

Frequent Infections Your immune system may get low when you are anemic, you start to get infections more easily. Even a cold can affect your body quite seriously.

Who is most at risk?

Infants When a child is growing up they are more likely to lack the sufficient iron they need to grow. It is often more common in developing countries but is getting increasingly common in the USA.

Women Due to the fact women menstruate and can lose a lot of blood they are more prone to becoming anemic. During pregnancy women need twice the amount of iron to account for the growing baby.

Adults with Internal Bleeding Bleeding internally can cause a lot of blood lose, this is usually down to stomach ulcers. The body cannot produce enough red blood cells to keep up with what it is losing, so the body become anemic.…

Is Your Fatigue From Anemia But No One Is Finding It?

Fatigue is one of the more common complaints that brings people to see their Primary Care Provider and even accounts for a loss of productive work days. As most people know, fatigue can stem from so many different sources including food allergies, insomnia, thyroid problems, Lyme Disease, chronic pain, adrenal dysfunction and so much more. Another very common cause of fatigue is anemia, typically defined as a deficiency of the oxygen carrying components of the blood, either the red blood cells themselves or the amount of hemoglobin within the red blood cell. Anemia itself has a multitude of possible sources and is beyond the scope of this article, however, important to note is that the presence of anemia can be foundational to other unresolved health issues. That’s why it is so important to discover if anemia is present as well as to understand how its presence can be hidden on a routine blood test if you are dehydrated at the time of your blood draw.

As a Physical Therapist, I am suspicious of anemia when someone is trying to follow through with a prescribed rehab program but can’t due to fatigue, light headedness, disproportional shortness of breath, extended heart rate recovery time, or even increased breath rate, heart rate, weakness or pallor at rest.

Additionally, as a Nutritionist, I am on alert when someone is on an anemia prone diet like vegan or vegetarian or when I see food diaries that are low in leafy greens, veggies, and legumes. I am highly suspicious of anemia when someone shows evidence of a malabsorption condition such as Gluten Intolerance. I ask about stool color and consistency and look for paleness in the lower eyelids, nail beds and palmer creases. Just as Xray, MRI and surgical reports provide me with all of the orthopedic data I need when treating someone as a Physical Therapist, knowing the results from blood work, glucose studies and GI workups that a physician has ordered also round out the patient’s total picture when I am working with someone on Nutritional Therapy.

Your Primary care Provider will test for anemia usually by ordering a standard blood panel called a Complete Blood Count (CBC). It is looking for the anemia markers I first mentioned about red blood cells and hemoglobin. Red blood cells are a solid particle in the blood and are quantified in relation to the liquid portion of the blood sample. If you happen to be dehydrated (lacking adequate fluid) at the time of your blood draw, then the proportion of solid particles (cells) to the liquid portion of your blood will be skewed and it will look like you have more red blood cells than you actually do. Your blood values can look normal and if you really are anemic, it may have been missed! That’s why it is imperative that you hydrate sufficiently the day before your blood draw and even drink a glass of water upon waking the morning of your blood test.

People have been looking for better sinusitis remedies for centuries to treat their sinus problems. In the old days people would treat their sinuses with ingredients that they had around their house. Today, we have the luxury of science and modern medicine to treat our sinusitis, but don’t give up on grandma’s remedies quite so fast. A lot of the old remedies are just as effective as many of today’s medicines.

Cayenne pepper was a key ingredient to one of these old fashioned treatments. All they would do is take a teaspoon of cayenne pepper and mix it with a cup of steaming hot water. They would drink around three cups a day of this mixture. Another favorite ingredient the old timers used was eucalyptus. They would mix a few drops of eucalyptus with boiling hot water then inhale the steam for about ten minutes. To make this remedy more effective, they would also put a towel over their head to form a tent over the pot which helped keep the steam from escaping. The herb thyme was also a popular ingredient used in home remedies. Since this herb has strong antiseptic properties, it was used to treat respiratory infections. What they would do with it was steep a couple teaspoons of it in a cup of boiling hot water and drink around three cups a day. The only problem with the home remedies is they can’t treat an infection that’s caused by bacteria in the sinus cavities.

When an infection is present that is a result of bacteria, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics to treat you illness. Antibiotics work real well for treating sinus infections, but they are of no help when it comes to treating sinus problems caused by allergies or viruses. Your health care provider will usually recommend a decongestant to help reduce the amount of mucus in your sinuses for this situation. The majority of these decongestants can be bought over the counter, and they will be in the form of a pill or nasal spray. As an additional benefit, you should also get some pain relief.

If you’re looking for a quick and simple treatment that you can use right now, all you have to do is perform a facial massage on yourself. This is performed by pressing your thumbs on each side of your nose for around thirty seconds. You can perform this procedure as often as necessary.

A vaporizer is another useful tool you should have to fight your sinusitis. Nighttime is when your sinuses act up the most, so this is when you want to whip out the vaporizer. Dry air reeks havoc on your sinuses at night, but when you use a vaporizer, the discomfort will be reduced or even eliminated.

The most important thing to remember is don’t let your sinusitis go untreated. It doesn’t matter what treatment you prefer; just make sure to use something. Hemolytic Anemia Caused by the Destruction of Red Blood Cells in the Body

Hemolytic anemia is the condition in which the bone marrow in the body is not able to keep up with the production of red blood cells which are being prematurely destroyed by the body. Healthy red blood cells normally last between one hundred and one hundred and twenty days.

However, with hemolytic anemia these cells are destroyed at a much faster rate and the bone marrow simply can not produce these cells fast enough to replace them. There are several different types of hemolytic anemia which are classified by what is causing the destruction of red blood cells in the body.

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Factors of Hemolytic Anemia

Hemolytic anemia can be caused by either intrinsic or extrinsic factors. The intrinsic factor is when the red blood cells themselves are abnormal which is typically hereditary and seen at birth such as in cases of sickle cell anemia where these “sickle cells” only last ten to twenty days and the bone marrow can not replace them fast enough with new cells.

Extrinsic factors are factors outside of the cells which cause them to be destroyed such as certain virus’s including malaria and black-water fever, medications-which is known as drug induced hemolytic anemia-, an abnormal immune system response, or blood clots.

Treatment of Hemolytic Anemia

Treatment of this type of anemia varies widely depending upon which type the individual has. Treatments may include trying to control the cause of the anemia, medications to increase the red blood cell count, or trying to reduce the rate in which the cells are being destroyed.

In mild cases this condition may need no treatment at all as long as the red blood cell count remains stable. In more severe cases blood transfusions or a “blood and marrow stem cell transplant” may be required.…
